Multinet Gas Network

Multinet Gas Network (MGN) is one of the largest distributors of natural gas in Victoria and serves connections in Melbourne's inner and outer eastern and southeastern suburbs. MGN owns the distribution network assets used to transport gas from the high-pressure transmission network operated by GasNet Australia Trust to the premises of residential, commercial and industrial gas users. With approximately 9,515 kilometres of distribution pipe, MGN covers an area of 1,603 square kilometres, has over 654,229 connections delivering around 60 petajoules of gas per annum.

Regulatory Environment

Revenue and access regime is regulated by the Victorian Essential Services Commission (ESC), with Access Arrangements under the National Third Party Access Code for Natural Gas Pipeline Systems. MGN has recently received a further final determination from the ESC on arrangements for the period 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2012. Post this period MGN will be transitioning to the Australian Energy Regulator (AER), with regulation under the newly enacted Gas Law.

Customer Base

MGN derives its revenue from competing retailers who supply gas to customers over the network.

Capacity / Utilisation

The gas market in Victoria is mature; gas penetration of households in Melbourne is the highest in Australia and MGN has the highest connections at over 68 connections per kilometre of mainline.

Gas demand and housing construction with new gas connections. Residential gas demand is weather dependent.
